Don’t Save Furnace Repairs for Next Season

Winter is over, but that doesn’t mean you’re not still using your heater on those particularly chilly nights. And as long as your heater is running just fine, there’s no reason to stop using it, right?

That usually is right unless your heater suddenly develops a repair issue… But what with it being so close to the end of the heating season, it might be better to just stop using the heater, hold off on that repair, and then have it fixed later when it gets cold again.

That’s definitely a solid plan if your goal is to save a few bucks right now, but other than that, we can’t see it being any good for you. We can assure you that having your heater repairs performed as soon as they arise will always be the better option. Here’s why:

Carbon Monoxide Leaks

One of the biggest reasons you shouldn’t procrastinate on heating repairs is because of the inherent safety issues. Depending on the kind of heating system you’re running, that can create some serious risks, such as carbon monoxide leaks.

Natural gas furnaces combust natural gas to created heated air. Through the process of combustion, some of the fuel is not going to be completely burned off. This exhaust is carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that can become deadly if inhaled in large enough quantities.

Normally, carbon monoxide is released through the flue and expelled into the outdoors. But in a faulty system in need of repairs, it can find its way back into your home. Common causes include:

  • Cracked heat exchanger: The heat exchanger will gradually wear out over time, possibly forming cracks from which carbon monoxide can escape.
  • Cracked or clogged flue pipe: A thorough furnace maintenance check can ensure that your flue pipes are not cracked and releasing carbon monoxide. There’s also the possibility that they can become clogged when animals build their nests inside them.

Eliminate the Chances of Exacerbating Repair Issues

Unless you’ve planned out the exact date for when you plan to get those heating repairs, you run the risk of turning the heater back on again without getting the issue fixed. If not you, then it might be a family member who isn’t aware that the heater shouldn’t be turned on again. It will be hard to blame them when it starts getting cold outside again!

Running the heater with an issue is only going to make that problem worse in a number of ways:

  • Loose or damaged components will only get worse and possibly damage other parts.
  • Efficiency issues will cost you more money and give you an inflated cost on your heating bill.
  • Increased chance of the heater overheating or creating a safety issue.

If you need heating repairs in Glendale, AZ at the very end of winter, there’s no reason you shouldn’t have that repair taken care of as soon as possible. It will save you from dangerous safety issues, extra costs from unnecessary repairs, and the added stress of procrastinating!
