August in Phoenix can be brutal. Even people who don’t live here know how hot it gets during the later summer—and how much air conditioning becomes a vital part of life.
Unfortunately, home air conditioning systems face their greatest peril during August: a combination of intense heat and the strain they’ve already experienced through early summer. Trust us, this is a busy time for air conditioning contractors. We handle many emergency calls in summer, and this is a reason we offer ‘round the clock service.
You can make August easier on your air conditioner and yourself if you follow several tips. In this post, we’ve compiled some of the best ways to improve the performance and efficiency of your air conditioning in Scottsdale, AZ and keep some of the heat off both of you.
Never delay calling for AC repairs
If you notice your AC doing something strange (such as odd noises, rapid cycling), don’t write it off as something you can get to later because it’s the end of summer. When you delay having a faulty AC repaired, you put yourself at a high risk of a broken cooling system during one of the hottest days. Procrastinating on repairs has other consequences, such as a plunge in system efficiency, worsening of the problem, and a shortening of the air conditioner’s service life.
Keep out as much radiant heat as possible
One of the main sources of heat entering your home during summer is through the windows. Close shutters and drapes on sun-facing windows during the day and you’ll significantly reduce how much heat energy the AC has to remove.
Use other methods to cool off
If your house has ceiling fans, now is the time to make the best use of them. You can also use standing fans and desk fans to help cool you off—this uses much less energy than running the AC and can help you feel 8–10° cooler. (Caution: don’t plug multiple fans in at one socket, as this may overload the circuit.) Cool drinks and a lukewarm shower midday will also help you stay cool with the continual use of the AC.
Keep the thermostat up, not down
When a 100°+ day arrives, you may want to fight back with the lowest setting possible on the thermostat. Don’t do this! Settings this low can cause the air conditioner’s evaporator coil to freeze over. It also places enormous stress on the AC, making it run longer than it should, while giving you an indoor temperature that’s too cold for comfort. Raise the thermostat to as high as you find comfortable, and this will not only relieve the AC, it will slow down how fast heat enters the house.
